What is Scrum?

Scrum is a lightweight framework for the processing of complex projects and the development of products. Scrum is based on the values and principles of agile software development. In addition Scrum values: openness, focus, commitment, respect and courage.

In Scrum the entire team works together to plan their work and to develop the given requirements and to present the results. The team has regularly the opportunity to reflect on the practices. This leads to more focus on results, to a closer working relationship and to the reduction of knowledge silos.

In Scrum all effort is focused on business success. Work is broken down into small chunks and prioritized to maximize business value. The team provides working software In regular intervals , e.g. every two weeks. This ensures that customers experience regular progress and that results are quickly usable.

The transparency in Scrum supports to uncover problems early. The repetition of some tasks makes some problems unbearable and all involved people are required to eradicate those problems quickly. It is often necessary to automize sub-processes, like integration, test and delivery. Thus the development process will be optimized and the development velocity is improved over time.

In Scrum the teams work with a clear “Definition of Done” which has been commonly agreed with the customers or their representatives. This focus on “done” supports to achieve a high quality of the software and all necessary deliverables. The frequent feedback cycles in Scrum also support this focus on quality and customer delight.

In summary, Scrum has the following advantages:

  • Improved knowledge sharing and team work
  • High quality of the results
  • Improved customer satisfaction
  • Improved productivity

My experience is that teams quickly get accustomed to this new approach and after a short while they will not want to return to the previous way of working.
